Due to the pervasiveness of hype-machine, i try to avoid culling multiple tracks from there to pass along, but honestly this song is just too appealing to pass up.

the Dum Dum girls covering the smiths - there is a light that never goes out

The Smith’s songs beg to be covered, and the dum dum girls do a great job making the song their own but maintaing a familiar feeling with the original track. The dum dum girls EP, he gets me high was recently released with this track on it and it is definitely worth checking out (“Wrong Feels Right” is a pretty good intro to the band).  Their sound is pretty traditional for a 2011 girl’s rock group - but the music is really well assembled.  Unfortunately after all of the OFWKTA i’ve been consuming everything sounds pretty disposable.

Toro Y Moi’s New Beat set to some archival footage by some fan.

This past week has kept me insanely busy, heres what I have been listening to

A shit ton of OFWGKTA, (the albums Earl, Radical and Rebel) - and honestly I can’t really describe what keeps me interested, but I continue listening.  Ive also started to notice a lack of conistency quality-wise across the crew’s body of work but honestly, with such a young group of basically amateurs this is forgivable.

Not alot of Radiohead’s new album the king of limbs.  I have’t spent a lot of time with the album, but what i’ve heard seemed uninspired.

Surfer Blood’s album Astrocoast.  I didn’t notice this album when it first came out, but tracks like Catholic Pagans, and Slow Jabroni really got me to love this brand of indie surf rock.  The band puts together some really impressively flexible rhythms in the album.

To Travelers and Trunks (2009) - Hey Marseilles.  On my first listen this album seemed a litte cute and contrived for my tastes, but as i’ve spent more time with this album, the sincerity of the work and the near-orchestral buildup of some tracks harmonies keep this album really enjoyable

Random Next Track in my iTunes -

what an awesome album.

Throughout my first listen of this song, I was just generally shocked that someone sampled the bird and the bee’s (awesome) polite dance song.  The track shows some promise and gives me an excuse to post one of my favorite songs that normally wouldn’t fit very well here at pripyat. (also this video is pretty insane)

Gorillaz- Empire Ants (Miami Horror Remix)

gorgeous flowing track.  I had a lot of fun filling in my own lyrics in this song because i honestly couldn’t understand any of the actual ones

Welcome to my Spaceship →

My good friend Matty Niekrug just dropped his first mix tape Welcome to my Spaceship under the pseudonym Stereotype.  He has been working on the mixtape for 3ish years now and I can say from personal experience that his flow and freestyle is nasty.  Check out the tape and let me know what you think.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All - Sandwitches

these crazy fucks went nuts on the Fallon show - watch and enjoy.

make sure to note the second comment on the video (if you link through) and the dude rolling a joint on the right side of the stage throughout the whole performance (he is first noticeable at 1:27 and then a few times after 2:10). hilarious.

Twitter was blowing up about these dudes before they went on stage, so I’ve been checking em out since their performance on Fallon. The young crew (members of OFWGKTA are from 16-23 years old) is gaining critical love, and their charismatic performances are turning heads from other artists and plenty of fans.  Words really can’t describe these guys, the tearm horrorcore has been thrown around but that description falls pretty short.  Check em out on their tumblr.

It is easy to see why Luisa Maita’s star is rising in Brazil - her seductive voice and singing is distinctively South American.  Her voice floats and stings over a layered but generally uncomplicated backing by her band.  This is a great artist to detox all the black eyed peas and grungy techno out of your system. If you want more check out her intimate performance at the NPR tiny desk website.

One of the most interesting things about Ghostface’s album (and Raekwon’s 2009 “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II”)  is that its remarkably regressive.  While a lot of rappers are moving away from the street testimonial style of rapping that was prevalent as the Genre expanded - these two Wu pillars aren’t changing the formula, they are perfecting it.
